Know your GSTIN – What is GST Number?

GSTIN refers to Goods and Services Tax Identification Number allocated to each GST register seller.

1. What is GSTIN?

Earlier GST was implemented, all sellers enrolled under the state VAT law were appointed a unique TIN number by the particular state tax authorities. Correspondingly, service providers were doled out a service tax registration number by the Central Board of Excise and Custom (CBEC).
Going ahead, in the new GST administration, every single enrolled taxpayer will get united into one single platform for consistence and administration purposes and will be appointed enlistment under a single authority. It is expected that 8 million taxpayers will be moved from the different platform into GST.
These organizations will be assigned a unique Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GTIN).
Verification of GSTIN should be possible on the GST Portal. Look at our article on GST Verification for a well-ordered guide.

2. Structure of GSTIN

Every taxpayer is allocated a state-wise PIN-based 15-digit Goods and Services Taxpayer Identification Number (GSTIN).
Here is an arrangement separate from the GSTIN:
  • The initial two digits speak to the state code according to Indian Census 2011. Each state has a one of a kind code. For example,
The state code of Karnataka is 29
The state code of Delhi is 07
  • The following 10 digits will be the PAN number of the taxpayer
  • The 13th digit will be relegated in view of the quantity of enlistment inside a state
  • The 14th digit will be Z of course
  • The last digit will be for check code. It might be a letter in order or a number.

3. How to apply for GSTIN?

It is a part of the Goods and Service Tax registration process. Once the application is accepted by the GST officer, an interesting GST Identification Number is allotted to the merchant.
There are two approaches to enlist for GST:
  • through GST Online Portal or
  • through GST Seva Kendra set up by Government of India
The accompanying points of interest are required to apply for GST :

4. What is the cost of getting GST Identification Number?

Getting GST Identification Number and Registering for Goods and Services Tax is free of cost.

5. How is GSTIN not the same as GSTN?

Do not get confounded between GST Identification Number (GSTIN) and Goods and Service Tax Network (GSTN). GST Identification Number is a tax enrollment number under GST.
Though, the Goods and Service Tax Network is an association which deals with the whole IT arrangement of the GST entry. This entryway will be utilized by the Government of India to track each monetary exchange and will give taxpayers all administrations – from enrollment to recording charges and keeping up all duty points of interest.
